Nasu Onsen: Travel 13 Centuries Back in Time

Nasu Onsen-kyo, nestled on the slopes of Mount Chausu, part of the Nasu Mountain Range in Tochigi Prefecture, is a renowned hot spring area with a rich history dating back to 630 AD. The volcanic activity of Mount Chausu, which is 1,915 meters high and the only active volcano in the prefecture, feeds the abundant natural hot springs in the area.

Hot Springs

The Nasu Onsen-kyo area consists of several notable hot springs.

It has a simple spring quality effective for tuberculosis, chronic eczema, neuralgia, and rheumatism.

  3. Kita Onsen: This secluded inn, accessible by a 400-meter walk from the parking lot, features a large swimming pool-like bath and "Tengu no Yu," a unique bath. Known for its abundant hot water, it offers relief for neuralgia, gout, and more.

  4. Benten Onsen: Re-discovered in 1884, this spring is known for its healing properties for skin conditions and digestive diseases. The water is simple spring quality with no odor or color.

  5. Takao Onsen: Found in the mid-1800s, this spring, located at the upper reaches of Takao Makkawa River, is known for its white, sulfur-rich waters beneficial for chronic skin diseases and neuralgia.

  6. Yahata Onsen: With a panoramic view of the Nasu Plain, this spring offers simple spring water beneficial for fatigue recovery and hemorrhoids. It's surrounded by vast fields of azaleas that bloom beautifully from May to June.

  7. Shin Nasu Onsen: Developed in 1923, this area near the Asahi Bridge features high-temperature water suitable for treating nerve pain, muscle pain, and joint pain.
